Sourcing for casted components for a global company active in the automotive sector

Client's problem:

The client, a major American car and truck parts manufacturer, asked PMR Consulting to identify potential suppliers for casted components across 12 Central and Eastern European countries.

Our solution:

Before launching the project PMR arranged a teleconference with the client to ensure that all the characteristics and requirements regarding the potential suppliers were fully understood. At project start-up, a team of PMR consultants with significant experience in sourcing studies and a native command of the necessary languages was chosen. The first step was to establish contact with national branch organizations in order to receive their recommendations concerning the best potential suppliers to the automotive industry. Following these recommendations PMR conducted interviews with other market insiders, scanned the available relevant publications and reports, as well as PMR's own databases to ensure that no promising automotive supplier had been overlooked. From that point, PMR proceeded to contact the companies in question, interview them in order to find out if their capabilities, production profiles and quality systems matched the requirements set by the client. On the basis of the activities described above, PMR was able to identify and profile a very large number of foundries in CEE, which could potentially become suppliers of automotive components to our client. As a next step, PMR identified the best companies on the list, which were reviewed by the client, who chose those which offered the best value for money.

How the project ended:

Two of the companies on the list (in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic) became our client's suppliers. Their products matched the quality of the previous suppliers, who were located in Italy. They proved to be less expensive, however, resulting in major savings for PMR's client.
